Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) is required for all multi person use electrical items within commercial premises or supplied in a tenanted environment, these tests are usually carried out annually. PAT testing ensures all electrical equipment in use is actually safe to use, from the plug to the internal wiring many checks and tests are made to ensure their electrical integrity. An inventory is produced with certificates for each item tested.

Although there is no actually set time for testing intervals most insurance providers stipulate 12 months. There are low and high risk items such as power drills used on-site which would require more frequent testing, then there is a low rick item such as a Hotel bedside lamp.
